A Night Out – Encounters with The Fringe

Halloween: the night where the veil seems to thin, and the things that go bump in the night make good on that promise. Every year someone goes missing, just to become another campfire story written in blood. Or whatever winds up left of them. But there’s candy to be had. When the sun dips behind the trees, and evening settles over town, you take to the streets with one goal in mind. You’re going to be the best Trick-or-Treater in town — better yet, this side of the river. The neighborhood teems with gaggles of kids. Some with fresh-painted faces running down driveways to meet their friends, and others with their masks askew and candy sacks weighted with loot. Glowing ghosts dangle from leafless branches, fake cobwebs cling to hedges, and animatronic witches cackle as they guard candy bowls. It’s almost enough to take your mind off of those tall tales about something staring from the edge of the woods. The ones that kids tell when they go tearing through their front door screaming. The ones uncles tell just to see who believes them. But it can be harder to ignore when it’s on your trail, with a craving just as insatiable as yours. All you’ll need to survive are a set of polyhedral dice, a journal, and a bucket full of sugar.
